The first hole at Leominster is one of several risk and reward holes for the longer hitters. Straight par 4. Where the fairway camber is gently from left to right with an oak tree on the left hand side and a two tier green
Unless going for the green off the tee, leave yourself far enough back so the Oak tree doesn’t impede your 2nd shot.
An uphill par 4 where an errant tee shot can quickly rack up your score. This is the first green on the course that represents one of Leominster's greatest defences - It's unexpectedly sloping and undulating greens
Take a mid iron from the tee to the flatter part of the fairway on the right leaving yourself if around 150y to the green.
This long par 4 is stroke index 1. A gentle dogleg left with a green guarded by 2 bunkers at the front and out of bounds behind the green. Shorter hitters may want to lay up with their 2nd shot.
A well placed tee shot ending on the left side of the fairway enables a better line to the green.
A well placed tee shot allows this par 5 to be reached in two. Three large trees on the fairway can block your 2nd shot. Your approach shot will be to a green downhill. Danger lurks long and left, but an accurate approach will provide a great birdie opportunity.
If you can't clear the trees on the fairway, your tee shot should be short enough to get over them with your 2nd shot.
A short uphill par 4 that can be reached from the tee if you can clear the trees lining the left side of the hole. The green is protected by a false front, a bunker to the right. A shot to the green that comes up short is liable to roll back down the hill.
A mid iron over the marker post should leave a short wedge into the green. Leave your approach underneath the hole.
A beautifully framed hole with a daunting tee shot. The Lugg river on the left for the length of the hole and a steep slope full of trees on the right. A tight narrow green awaits your approach shot. Anything off the green leaves a tricky chip shot.
A gentle fade with an iron should give you an excellent opportunity with your approach.
One of the widest fairways, danger still lurks for any tee shot too far left. A deep ditch in front of the green will punish any short approach shots, as will a hollow of rough to the right.
A driver or 3 wood off the tee helps to ensure your 2nd shot doesn't require such a long iron over the pond.
A straight hole where an accurate tee shot provides an approach to one of the flattest greens on the course. Make the most of this birdie hole before embarking on a difficult start to the back nine
Finding the fairway off the tee is the difference between a good birdie opportunity and getting blocked out by trees.
A long, tough hole. To reach the green in two, a tee shot must be long enough to avoid entanglement with the trees on the left, but not too long to get swallowed up by the out of bounds on the right, where the hole dogleg’s left. The green has a penalty area ditch to the right. A par is a good result here.
A Tee shot aimed down the middle/right of the fairway with a draw is the play here.
The last of the uphill holes with a dogleg left, a long tee shot allows the hole to be reached in two. A blind 2nd shot awaits a shorter tee shot Another small green protected by a bunker front left, penalty areas & out of bounds to the right and back of the hole
Whilst reachable in two, a simple lay-up with your second shot still represents a better option of a decent score.
A tremendous dogleg right. A tee shot needs to be long enough or far enough left to allow a clear shot to the green that slopes from front to back with a bunker front right. The quality of your approach is the difference between the chance of a birdie or a three putt.
Aim towards the tree lined left side of the fairway. The sloped fairway will bring the ball back towards the centre.
One of the shorter par 4’s but trees lining the right hand side help protect from reaching in one. The smallest green on the course has a bunker front left and anything over the back will represent a very tricky up-and-down to save par.
Try to keep your tee shot down the left hand side to give a better shot to the green.
A fantastic final hole. Dogleg right with anything to the right of the path being out of bounds and going too far left means you’ll more than likely be blocked by the line of tall trees separating the 18th & 1st fairways. Hold your nerve with your approach to the green over the pond and a clubhouse balcony full of viewers behind!
A long iron/hybrid off the tee gives you a chance to place the ball in a great spot for your 2nd shot. Don’t be greedy trying to cut off too much of the right hand side.
